Canyon Artists Headline 60th Annual Navajo Festival of Arts & Culture
Canyon artists were prominent performers at the 60th Annual Navajo Festival of Arts & Culture at the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff. Native American flutist Kelvin Mockingbird (upper left) opened each day with songs from his remarkably expressive and haunting flute album, Sacred Fire. One of America’s elite flute players, Kelvin teamed up with guitarist/flutemaker/flutist Aaron White (lower right) as Burning Sky. Burning Sky, which released its first album Burning Sky with Canyon in 1994, was the first ensemble to include drums with Native American flute and guitar. Tragically, Burning Sky’s drummer, Michael Bannister, passed away last year. Mockingbird and White played selections from A Simple Man, Blood of the Land, and the Grammy nominated Spirits in the Wind. The lovely and always gracious Radmilla Cody served as emcee for the two days of performances and added two sets of traditional and contemporary songs from Spirit of a Woman and Seed of Life. A surprise guest was James Bilagody (lower left) who is best known for his rock album, Sacred Stage. James performed a beautiful rendition of a traditional song immortalized by Ed Lee Natay, Canyon’s first artist in 1951. Heritage Program Coordinator Anne Doyle produced the festival for the Museum which is directed by Robert Breunig.
