New Release: Rain in July
Rain in July is the latest recording from Alex Smith, Cheevers Toppah and Kit Landry whose tapestry of vocal harmonization is on the cutting edge of Native American musical expression. This talented trio blends Native American song forms and themes with European choral hymnody to create music that is both traditional and contemporary. Alex Smith (Pawnee/Sauk & Fox) and Cheevers Toppah (Kiowa Navajo) first developed this new genre for the GRAMMY® nominated Intonation which was followed by Harmony Nights in which Nitanis “Kit” Landry (Ojibwe) added her a glistening feminine timbre to to Smith and Toppah’s rich masculine tones. Two special guest artists join the trio on two tracks – Native American flutist Anthony Wakeman adds a haunting flute introduction to the title track, Rain in July, and Diné singer Louie Gonnie contributes a composition and his peerless singing to the track Swirling Smoke, a musical prayer sung in Diné (Navajo). Seven songs of Rain in July have poignant lyrics in English about love and its travails and triumphs. Rain in July was engineered by Jack Miller and Alexis Santos, and produced by Stephen Butler.
